About
Empowering the Future
Sha’alvim for Women (SFW) was established to provide a space where motivated young women could engage with Torah on a sophisticated, intellectual, and deeply personal level.
Our goal is to transform the “gap year” into a lifelong foundation. We believe that when a woman is empowered with the skills to learn independently, she becomes an architect of her own spiritual life and a leader within the Jewish community.
A Personalized Journey
Our educational philosophy centers on the “Independent Thinker.” We offer a balanced curriculum that honors both tradition and modern inquiry:
Intellectual Agency: Students “drive” their own schedules, choosing from a vast menu of courses in Tanach, Halacha, Talmud, and Jewish History.
Skills & Tools: We focus on providing the textual tools necessary to open any Sefer with confidence.
Heart & Ruach: Through small-group chaburot and inspiring Shabbatonim, we ensure that learning is a vibrant, soul-stirring experience.
A Sanctuary in the Heart of Jerusalem
Located in the beautiful Malcha neighborhood, SFW offers a unique “city-sanctuary” experience. Our campus provides a warm, communal environment that feels like a quiet retreat, yet sits within the vibrant heartbeat of Jerusalem.
Here, students have the safety and serenity needed to ask big questions and forge lifelong friendships, all while being minutes away from the spiritual and cultural landmarks of the Holy City.
With a dedicated faculty that opens their hearts and homes, SFW is your perfect home base for a year of true discovery.
FAQs
What is the mission and Hashkafa of SFW?
SFW is a Religious Zionist institution dedicated to empowering young women to become passionate, independent Torah thinkers. We celebrate the milestones of the State of Israel with communal tefillah and immersive trips. Our goal is to provide the spiritual and intellectual foundation needed for a life of Avodat Hashem in both the university setting and beyond.
What kind of mentorship can I expect from the Faculty?
At SFW, faculty members are more than just teachers—they are mentors who are deeply invested in your personal journey. With many staff members living nearby or on campus, their homes are always open for a late-night talk, a chabura, or emotional support. These relationships form the backbone of the SFW experience and often last a lifetime.
How does SFW balance an Israeli experience with Overseas needs?
We provide an authentic Israeli atmosphere within a framework that supports the specific goals of our students. You will learn in a vibrant environment that values the Land of Israel, with opportunities to build connections with the local Nof Ayalon community. Our schedule allows you to “drive” your own education while staying connected to the pulse of Eretz Yisrael.
What are the living and dining facilities like?
Our dorms are designed to be your “home away from home,” featuring modern air-conditioned rooms for three to four students with private bathrooms and showers. We provide three nutritious meals daily in our dining hall, and for anything else, our on-campus makolet (grocery store) is fully stocked with both local and familiar favorites.
How is the neighborhood of Malcha for a year in Israel?
Malcha offers the perfect balance for a student: it is a beautiful, safe, and quiet residential neighborhood that serves as a calm sanctuary for study, while still being part of the vibrant fabric of Jerusalem. You aren’t just “visiting” the city; you are living in it. Whether it’s walking to local parks, enjoying the convenience of the nearby Malcha Mall, or taking a quick ride to the Old City, our location ensures that Jerusalem is your classroom and your home.
Will my credits transfer to College?
Yes. SFW is proud of its academic standing. Our courses are accredited by numerous universities, and we participate in Joint Programs with Yeshiva University, Touro College, and the Teachers Institute of Chicago, ensuring your year of growth also counts toward your degree.
